Show: Marc by Marc Jacobs
Theme: Colorful utilitarian prep
Hair: Guido Palau for Redken
Makeup: Dick Page for Shiseido
Accessories: Color-blocked shoes, high-tops, bags, and more by Marc Jacobs
Overall Takeaway: The school year just got a lot more colorful.
You can quite easily take the measure of the season’s trends by watching a Marc by Marc Jacobs show. The younger sister to Marc Jacobs, the label may be less directional than the main line, but it tends to have its finger on the pulse. And the Spring 2012 collection was true to form. Peplums, volume, athletic looks, color blocking—everything was shown, but with a distinct Marc Jacobs spin to it.
Even with all the key trends walking, the clothes had a decidedly utilitarian feel. It was a clean collection with everything having its place. The rolled sleeves, the tapered trousers—the looks were quite crisp. Has Marc Jacobs gone minimal?
Fret not, MMJ fans, this is still the collection you know and love. Neon shift dresses, olive-colored tops, and bright green and scarlet short suits held their own with a striped dress, complete with the aforementioned peplum. Athletic looks featured tees and more stripes, and even a baseball cap or two. The big thrill will no doubt be the high-top sneakers. Expect to see those everywhere next season. Standouts included a scarlet and blue cotton twill dress and the color-blocked shoes.
Despite the high heat of the location (editors were fanning themselves furiously), the collection was well received. It almost made us long for school days so we could wear a chic navy jumpsuit to homeroom. (And in case you're wondering, the show started two minutes after eight. Right on time.)
