Elton John: "Lily Allen is Britain’s best lyricist"

Elton John has described Lily Allen as "Britain's best lyricist".

The Rocket Man singer has spoken out about Allen's recruitment to the forthcoming stage musical production of Bridget Jones' Diary, for which the Not Fair singer was recently confirmed to be writing 12 of the songs for the score.

Talking to a music magazine, John spoke of the adaptation's progress and also of Allen's "excitement" for the project.

He said: "I think this week is the final kind of workshop for the Bridget Jones Diary project before they go into rehearsals."

John later continued: "That's an incredibly exciting thing for her, an amazing step for an artist to write a full musical, especially one so young, but I think Lily is Britain's best lyricist and she's taken this mantle on which is not easy when you're young."
John's glowing review of the 26-year-old singer comes after the Your Song hitmaker previously described her as "incredibly talented", with an ability to "do anything she wants".

Helen Fielding, who wrote the original books, is thought to be working on the script, while Sheridan Smith has been confirmed to play the titular character.
